Got Cravings?

Food CravingsI read in the paper that people are eating more candy these days. They were saying in the article that the candy was of the chewy-sticky variety like Bit o Honeys and Swedish Fish and although the article was linking nostalgia to the type of candy being consumed, I knew it was something else.

Doreen Virtue PhD has studied the relationship between emotions and cravings. In her book Constant Craving A-Z she gives details on common food cravings and possible emotions. The  common feelings that correspond with the type of candies people are craving tends to be feelings of Fear, Tension and Worry. Not a surprise given today’s challenges.

Have you noticed that you are craving a certain type of food lately?

By not addressing the real issue -- for example “I am worried about my finances” -- and instead, eating a bag of gummy worms, you might feel better in the moment but I can assure you, your worry will still be there waiting for you after that last candy is good and gone. If you keep doing this, well -- you know what will most likely happen.

This behavior is not new. We all have these built in reflexes. After 911 people were  craving comfort foods like Mac and Cheese and Doughnuts which can give us a feeling of safety. So our food cravings really can point us to feelings and beliefs that need and want to be addressed.

Food and feelings are so closely linked that sometimes its hard to tell what’s driving what. Using food to avoid feelings will not only be a temporary fix but will most likely result in even more problems both emotionally and physically. Those feelings need to be acknowledged and healed to have true freedom from food.

People avoid feelings for all sorts of reasons. Everyone is unique, with their own perceptions of reality so finding the thoughts or beliefs that drive YOUR behavior is the key to freedom from food issues.

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is a gentle and effective way of healing these issues. It just might be the “magic pill” that everyone is looking for.
